When using an optical encoder it is often easier to improve accuracy and resolution than with a magnetic encoder. Optical encoders thrive in applications within close proximity to strong magnetic forces.

With absolute multiturn encoders, up to 24 bits of unique angular positions are output per revolution. The number of revolutions is also recorded. The unambiguous position is available even after the encoder has been disconnected from the power supply.
Incremental encoders deliver a certain number of pulses per shaft revolution. The speed of a movement is determined by measuring the period or counting the pulses per time unit.
Magnetic encoders are the perfect alternative to bearing mounted encoders, due to their compact design and easy mounting options on almost any shaft diameter. They are used today in drive and elevator technology, for asynchronous motors or external rotor motors, or in generators, large motors, and wind turbines.
The resolution of an encoder is determined by its cycles per revolution. Although the number of markings on the disk is fixed, with a quadrature encoder receiving up to 4 times as many output pulses as the number of lines or windows is standard. This gives quadrature encoders the appeal of high resolution.
